Camp KIT list & SMARTPHONE POLICY
What should I do before the camp?
- Book travel to Leeds
- Book your seat on one of three coaches from Leeds.
- Read the info guide
What should I bring with me?
Must Bring
- Tent
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping mat
- Medication – enough for all 6 days; there will be a cool box for medication (down to 16 degrees) but there is limited space, so please let us know if you will need cooling space so that we can ensure there’s enough
- Clothes for all weathers – including warm clothes (even though it’s August, it can still be cold, especially on night shifts or early starts), underwear, socks etc.
- Spare clothes – for if your tent gets flooded
- Waterproofs – coat and trousers
- Sturdy shoes
- Small backpack for day trips
- Torch or head torch
- Toiletries – toothpaste, toothbrush, period products, hairbrush, dry shampoo etc. (note: there are no showers)
- Tupperware for eating from
- Reusable cutlery
- Reusable mug/flask for hot drinks
- Water bottle
- Snacks (but no nuts or snacks containing nuts)
Nice to Have
- Portable charger (if you’re bringing a phone; there will be little to no charging for personal phones)
- Pillow
- Fairy lights (battery powered), bunting, banners ( or any other camp decorations)
- Book, cards, games
- Notebook and pen
Avoid bringing
- Smartphone
- Sentimental items – they may get wet, lost or, worst case scenario, taken by the police
- Valuables – e.g. laptops; they can also get wet, lost or taken by police
- Items which could identify you – e.g. bank cards, ID, diaries
Do not bring
- Knives – including penknives and Swiss army knives
- Illegal drugs
- Nuts – including anything containing nuts
A note on knives: Please don’t bring knives of any kind, including penknives and camping knives. There’s a risk of stop and search on entry to the camp, and unsympathetic media could use campers found with knives as a way of discrediting the movement we’ve all worked so hard to build. Please show solidarity and care for the collective and leave knives at home.
SMARTPHONE POLICY
Please leave your smartphone at home or bring a burner phone.
The reasoning for this policy:
There is a possible risk of stop and search going into and out of the camp, as well as a risk of phones being monitored remotely. Leaving phones at home provides individuals and the collective the best protection from this kind of surveillance and police information gathering, which could be incriminating.
Smartphone FAQs:
- Without personal smartphones, how will we communicate at camp? Each working group will have a radio for communication between campers.
- How can I contact camp or contact people outside camp without my phone? For communication between the camp and people outside (for example loved ones who need to contact a camper in an emergency), we have a designated brick phone for this. The number is 07934899239 and the phone will live in the Welcome Tent. Please make a note of this number and any numbers you might need while at camp.
- What if I need to be contactable for other reason (e.g. caring responsibilities)? You can bring your own phone, but with all the risks as articulated above. If this is the case we request you keep your phone out of workshops spaces, or annouce it to everyone involved in the workshop.
